Allergy season is upon us. People have itchy, runny eyes and noses. They can’t breath. And they are going through tissue like it’s going out of style. Maybe you can relate? Did you know that according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), allergic illnesses are an epidemic, with 1 in 5 Americans suffering from allergies? And the airborne triggers are things like pollen, mold, dust mites or animal dander. Tip #1: Kill the dust mites. Dust mites are microscopic bugs that live off of human skin. They can be found in your carpets, bed sheets, curtains, and upholstery. By cleaning your carpets and upholstery and other places they live you can control their population and kill these allergy aggravators! Tip #2: Control mold. Mold forms in areas of the home that are wet or damp. Clean and disinfect areas where mold is likely to grow. Places like your windowsills and frames, under your sinks, and in the corners of the bathroom. If you have a mold problem call an expert to clean it up. Tip #3: Vacuum one to two times per week. If there is a pet in your home you may need to vacuum even more often. For people with severe allergies I recommend HEPA filtration vacuums and disposable bags or a chamber that gets emptied after every use. Tip #4: Professionally clean your carpets regularly. We already touched on this but it’s really important. Your carpet is like a big filter that holds onto a lot of allergens. You release them back into the air every time you take a step. Clean your carpet and you clean your indoor air. And it’s important that you use a professional because our systems are the only ones that have the heat and suction powerful enough to remove these allergens. Tip #5: For severe allergies consult a health care professional. There are lots of products on the market today to control allergies. And so your doctor or health care provider can steer you in the right direction. Remember controlling your allergies is an ongoing thing.
